“Time to Change” Silence about Mental Health

March 25, 2011

Two posts in one day after silence for two months–odd, I know, but I saw something this afternoon that I want to share.

The last time I wrote about mental health and illness here–more than a year ago, shamefully–it was in part to share a campaign and video featuring Glenn Close, her sister, and numerous other people who are living with mental illness or mental health struggles or who have a loved one who is. If you missed that post the first time around, I encourage you to please check it out now.

Today’s brief post is just a vehicle to share with you another campaign, including an interactive video (or videos, rather) out of the UK, with a related important message about getting rid of the so-damaging stigma associated with mental illness and people’s discomfort with discussing it. The tone is lighter, the video shorter; the need for the change called for is quite real. This is a topic I still want to discuss further when I have more time, including discussion of Rosalynn Carter’s most recently published book, but right now, I want to quickly share this video and campaign, lest I forget.

Really interesting campaign, and if you choose the example that seems to promise a smooth outcome, you get to see a really rewarding and pleasant exchange. I confess, though, that I don’t get–and kind of don’t like–the other outcomes. I think they may have squandered their opportunity to show other ways it really might have turned out in favor of making fun of mental illness (like the one where the guy starts eating the architectural model and talking nonsense, or the one where he just explodes). Given how good the first response was, though, I have a strong suspicion I’m misunderstanding what’s going on there.

Thanks for bringing attention to this stuff. I often feel like my own trauma from some of the animal stuff I have experienced, and rescues I have been part of, and so on, is so taboo to talk about. This is a good place for stuff like this. It should be everywhere. You ever heard of the icarus project? That project has helped me so much.
