Lucky
August 3, 2010
You ever look down or over at one or more of them — dog, cat, chicken, rabbit, goat, rat, any of them — and suddenly feel yourself hit by overwhelming emotion, suddenly feel your chest tightening and your eyes filling up because of how *lucky* you feel to know them, really know them? And feel compelled to take a crappy iPhone photo and share it with the world? Yeah, me too.

They give us so much more than we could ever give them. I am so thankful for my canine friends!
Multiple times a day!!
I have felt this way countless times. It is a huge privilege to be worthy of their trust and love.
I’m constantly asking my husband, “Do you think they’re happy with us?” and what I really mean is, “Do you think they would choose to be with us if they had the power to make that choice?”. It’s not like they’re kids and they can grow up and leave. They are completely at our mercy, in nearly every way, and will be until death do us part. They didn’t get to choose us, but everyday I strive to be someone worthy of their choosing.
We do this all the time! It’s especially bad with rabbits, because their cuteness demands so many photos.
I always equate that feeling with pure, unconditional love. Nothing like it. I also believe that they do choose us as much as we choose them. No matter how they end up in your physical life.
YES. Every time I look at my herd. I can’t believe that out of all the humans on this earth, and all the animals, and all the years we’ve been around, I am the lucky one that gets to know these sweet, perfect, amazing critters right now. When people hear that all of our animals were rescued they say ‘oh they are so lucky to have you’ but really, WE are so lucky to have them.
Of course. And then five seconds later I am laying on the floor, in a pile of dogs. It’s the best time of of any day, hands down.
Yep, with 2 once-feral cats curled up asleep on the covers between my legs in bed as I write this … you bet!
i wish i was capable of loving everyone as equally as the animals we care for do. i hope some day to love just as much as they do! we are so lucky!
Most of the time I feel sadness for how we treat them.
True confessions: The happiest moment of my day away from home, is entering the door to be greeted like I’ve been gone for years, by a big, hairy, happy dog who is my world! <3
I have a folder in my p.c. with dozens of images of my cat Teco – 90% of them with her tongue stuck out! Too cute!
And when the world stresses me, I take my worries to the yard and share them with a flock of chickens. We examine little bits of gravel, twigs and grass on the ground and my troubles all disappear!
Am I "lucky" to know them? Beyond what any words of gratitude could ever say!
Absolutely.
