Got Hair? Got Fur? Then You’ve Got Oil-Spill Cleanup Material

May 5, 2010

Just saw this post from Vegansaurus, introducing us to Matter of Trust — and to the revelation that all that hair we’re brushing out of the cats and dogs in our homes and getting chopped off our heads for the summer could be going to hair mats and booms for oil-spill cleanup efforts. Seriously.

The activists in Vegansaurus’s home of San Francisco are collecting said hair in their community this weekend to ship off to Matter of Trust. And this is something that you can organize in your communities as well — call the animal groomers and hair salons in your neighborhood and make sure they know about this program. And if they’re not willing to send in their massive piles of hair themselves, and you have the time, see if they’ll at least collect the hair and deliver it to you or let you and fellow activists pick up the collected hair for shipment to Matter of Trust. Make sure they know too that this is something they can and should continue doing even after the Gulf tragedy has passed (though, really, do we expect it to ever really pass? maybe I should say after attention to it has faded).

My salon does this already! Yay for eco-friendly salons. Lucy would love to contribute, but she’s a pittie and doesn’t really have much fur to spare. :)

Thanks for re-posting this info. I feel so helpless watching this catastrophe. I would say I can’t believe that the clean-up/rescue/all out effort to cap this effing oil well is taking so long, except of course I CAN believe it. If some Islamic leader was responsible, we’d already be bombing his country.
I hope one of you plans to write about the bear that was shot near the gulf course in Minnesota yesterday. I heard it on the CBS radio news this morning and couldn’t stop cursing. The radio news even made a joke about it: something like “you’ve probably heard about shooting a birdie, but shooting a bear?” Aren’t people so funny?
