Thank Moo!
I know, the title is horrible corny but since the subject is Sadie the cow and my gratitude, I figure it’s appropriate. Animals are my passion. Trying to get people to see farmed animals as really awesome is one of my greatest goals. When I wrote The Stare of Sadie last week, I didn’t expect to hear from people who were printing it off to send to others or to receive emails thanking me for the post. I just wanted to convey my honest feelings for and about Sadie. That it moved (no pun intended) others is incredibly gratifying. That it might help shape the behavior of other human beings is forever humbling.
Some of you expressed concern about Sadie’s health, so I wanted to update. I am pleased to report she is feeling better. Not great – she’ll never be truly great, but she’s doing decently. She is moving around more and eating at a contented pace as opposed to the rushed gorging of last week. And, she’s back to being picky about when I can and cannot be in her presence. Turns out Sadie is much needier when feeling poorly….sounds like me! The pictures I’m posting were taken today and reflect a much more revived, active cow!
So thank you for caring. And thank you for not just caring but spurring yourself to action through forwarding, sharing your own experiences, and living as compassionate a life as you possibly can.
Also, enjoy the photos! To save on loading times, they are smaller. You can click on them to see larger versions. Warning: It might be like having a 1,200 lb cow is IN YOUR ROOM! That would, in fact, be a dream come true for me. :)

She’s lovely. When I lived in England I used to shortcut to the trains across a paddock with a group of cows. It took no time it seemed for them to recognize me, and they would often amble over to greet me. Being a city girl I was a bit afraid at first, but I just had to stop and pet them. Imagine my surprise when one gave me a lick! What a super start to the day.
Marji,
Thank you for writing such a powerful piece about Sadie. My despair about the horrors our species visits upon the less powerful fellow inhabitants of our planet increases daily……however…..knowing there are folks around that are as caring and eloquent as you helps.
Thanks again,
Glenn
I also loved the post about Sadie and “shared” it in my RSS feed. It makes it so much more personal for people to see ONE cow and hear that ONE story, rather than thinking of “dairy cows” as this big abstract group. I think it’s harder for people to understand the individual suffering unless they can hear the story of an individual, you know?
These pictures are just amazing, too – she is beautiful!!!
Beautiful photos, Marji! Normally I’d ask you to give Sadie plenty of hugs and kisses for me, but she’d probably appreciate a wide berth instead. :)
I love her. She is magnificent! I love cows SO much but other than driving past pastures of ‘beef’ cattle in Texas, I’ve never gotten to be close to any. You are so very lucky, and so is she. Thanks for the update!
