I have read your important book, and of course as a committed ethical vegan your analysis about automatic cultural conditioning resonates as so true to me. There is one piece though that I feel is missing, and it has to do with our evolutionary and biological history of using animals for survival. One intelligent ex-vegan neurobiologist professor that I encountered said that the need for meat, either on a psychological or physical basis, is "too much in our DNA" at this point in time for us to be healthy without it. She says her health is much better on a Weston A. Price diet. And then there are the numerous people one encounters who would otherwise be vegan because of their sincere love of animals, except that they say they don't feel well without meat, and/or their doctors mandate them to eat animal protein. Even the Institute for Integrative Medicine curriculum is comprised of dietary "theories" and they believe in "bio-individuality". So though it saddens me for the fate of animals, I feel I must accept the possibility that it is true that not everyone can thrive on a vegan diet ... I don't know ... correct me if I'm wrong. Even John Robbins has a Food Revolution Summit going on now on the internet, featuring many presenters ... a few of them in favor of incorporating some healthily raised animal protein in the diet. Again, that does not bode well for the animals ... it seems to me that we will be going in the direction of the erroneous "humane slaughter". So my point is that because of our evolutionary heritage, carnism may be too hard-wired into most people to ever be replaced by anti-speciesist insights. I pray, and will still work towards that not being the case. For the animals.

Do you call the police when you see someone mowing their lawn? Is your home unsanitary?
