Hello Justin... Was wondering if you could define for me what you consider "very long lives"? Do they experience the four seasons at least a dozen times? No? Perhaps 8? 6? My guess is after 2 years of "happy life" - The vast majority are outta here! And really, I wouldn't want someone to decide which day was my last one - So why would I say it's alright to determine that for someone else... No matter how "old" (or young) they are?

"The cow has too much milk for the calf, and the calf can die from scours and over feeding. The modern dairy cow have very few maternal instincts and are seriously better off not raising their calves themselves." Now we know that these cows have been specifically bred to lactate as much as possible. All dairy "shows" and contests will evaluate how much milk, butter-fat, etc. each "prize" cow "yields". And I assure you that even though it "hurts" her now "giving" 50 or so pounds per day --- Her species is still being re-designed, "improved" and manipulated to "give" even more! And still it will never be "enough" for her calves then either.

You say too they don't have maternal instincts? Gosh, that's not what I've been told from people who have worked on and witnessed the separation of her babies from her... Why would dairies encourage removing the babies at dusk (so she's not aware and can't defend her baby?) That modern-day dairy cows don't have the same instincts to nurture as human mothers do, cat mothers do, dog mothers do, squirrel mothers do, kangaroo mothers do, etc. is just a very, very strange and inaccurate notion!

Animals in nature certainly wait much longer to have babies than what humans with the intent of monetary gain have the patience for. Let's tell the truth - They are bred like machines.

Finally, your concern about turning out all the "livestock" to meet horrible deaths is unwarranted. If we stopped breeding them this "problem" wouldn't exist at all and we wouldn't have to provide them with a "bolt to their brain". Such an odd twist on what's compassionate... If we just stop putting the puppy in the burning building we can stop "rescuing" him!

You are all very mistaken. Feel free to email me and tell me why you're not. I will say that California has some pretty bad conditions for Dairy animals. I personally own a purebred cattle operation. I can guarantee that all my cows are happy and live very long lives. We do exhibit the yearling heifers and bulls up to 2 years of age across the USA in cattle shows of various sizes. We do sell steers for meat, but our heifers are all either retained or sold for breeding purposes. Have you ever seen a dairy cow try to raise a calf? It's bad. Very bad. The cow has too much milk for the calf, and the calf can die from scours and over feeding. The modern dairy cow have very few maternal instincts and are seriously better off not raising their calves themselves. Now beef cattle, on the other hand love raising their young, and do a very good job at it. Addressing the constant pregnancy issue. Have you not seen animals in nature? They're constantly either pregnant or raising their young. Herd animals are wired to be pregnant, they are seriously better off this way. About their "retirement".....again, look at nature. When a herd animal, such as a deer, gazelle, or heck even a Zebra or Giraffe get too old to keep up with the rest, or get sick or anything....they get eaten. By other animals (humans are animals too)....lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas. And that death is a lot worse than having a bolt shot into their brain and instant death. Would you have all the livestock of the world turned out and left to their own devices? I guarantee you that most all of them would die quite horrible deaths. Pigs might do okay, but pigs are a different story altogether.

Your uterus is not your own, your calf is not your own, and your teats and milk are not your own.

So, so true. And to think, most feminists still don't see how this is a feminist issue. Sigh.

Those "happy cow" commercials infuriate me. In particular, the one that shows male and female cows flirting with one another, as though they're allowed to choose their mates, reproduce naturally and form family units - tragicomedy, I tell you.

Well written! And to think used to laugh at those commercials, find them humerous when I still ate meat, hell, even when I still drank milk. Now I know how disgusting it is, since I've gone vegan, commercials like that make me want to throw my T.V. Across the room. Do you mind if I tweet a link to this? 'w'
