Izzy and Morty, Defying the Odds: A Story of Hope (and Cuteness!)

Izzy and Morty arrived at Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary on the day of their birth, 14 weeks ago today. Tiny runt piglets who fit in the palm of our hands, it was almost impossible to believe that they would one day be the size of the adult pigs in the pig yard. Izzy’s health was precarious in the beginning; neither had gotten any colostrum, and we found out later that runts as small as they were (even Morty, who was twice the size of Izzy from the start) had an extremely low survival rate. What they lacked in size, they made up for in sheer grit and determination, and it seems the danger is now past.
They are amazing little individuals, strong, determined, and full of life. Their story gives me hope. They give me hope. I have no talent as a video taker, but since I’ve been documenting bits of their lives in video each week when I volunteer at the sanctuary it seems fitting to gather together a longer video of their first 14 weeks as we come to the end of this year. It’s been amazing to re-view some of the early footage, and to watch them grow up all over again. So here it is, 14 weeks of cuteness, in a 10-minute video:
Izzy and Morty are the exceptions; the ones who were rescued instead of left to die. The ones who were rescued instead of being sent to slaughter at about six months old. The ones who survived really low odds. The ones who will never know anything but love and safety.
They frolic, they play, they do pig stuff, and they do things that remind us of dogs. They call to each other and they wrestle with each other and they snuggle up together for naps. The tragedy is that they are the exceptions; most pigs have a far different life.

Precious, precious, precious! What beautiful reminder of why we are vegan and for whom we fight/advocate.
Scratch their precious bellies for me next time you see them.
Thanks! And I’ll give them belly rubs for sure!
I think I’m in love!
Me too. :)
