In the event you didn’t see yesterday’s “On the Neglect of Animals by The Left,” Philip Steir, artist activist, blogger and volunteer at Animal Acres linked us to a video he directed for his band Consolidated back in the day.

I meant to go back and click on the link in Philip’s post, but forgot. So thank you for putting it here, in plain sight, Mary. This video had an incredibly powerful effect on me. It shows the interconntectedness of oppression in such a vivid way that I will never forget the concept — or the searing images. The one that haunts me the most is the frightened dog being dragged by those rough handlers to what I assume is a waiting dog-pound van. But all the evidences of oppression were hard to stomach. Watching this multi-pronged attack on freedom and peace for ALL makes me incredibly grateful for the goal that the bloggers have set for this site.
Philip would know better than I, but the image of the dog looks remarkably similar to one of a dog in Earthlings. The dog in Earthlings is shot, but only wounded, and then dragged into a garbage truck. The final image is of the truck’s giant jaw closing on the dog and for the rest of my life I will never forget it.

If my memory serves me well, which for the most part it’s quite rebellious and does not follow up properly, yet I do believe the footage of the scared dog being dragged through the streets is actually from NYC. I used footage from a documentary about the NYC animal care and control which in those days would round up strays and kill them within a few days. Horrible. Not much has changed in the big apple these days.
This video was made back in 1992 so I was using footage in regard to animal oppression that most people had never seen before. It’s ironic footage because in one shot you see african americans being round up and beaten by white police officers and the next footage you see african americans rounding up stray dogs and throwing them into big trucks to be taken away and killed. Oppression creates an artificial hierarchy that leads to the most defenseless without protection.
As we all know… the ugly truth about oppression is that because of the effects of discrimination and bigotry many times the oppressed become the oppressors.
The non humans always end up at the bottom.
